This year, the Gothenburg Culture Festival is expanding to more new locations and districts. We’ll be saying hello to Kviberg, Vega Bryggeri and Världslitteraturhuset. And to the whole of the internet.


Various associations carry out activities at Allégården from Monday to Friday. These include gymnastics, weaving, art classes, ceramics, hobbies, chess, bridge and choral singing.

Atalante is an artist-run stage and a forum that encourages innovation and new ways of thinking. The focus is on contemporary performing arts, modern choreography and experimental music. The centre also hosts film, art and festivals, encouraging cultural debate and discussion.

Brewhouse is a cultural centre that combines an industrial setting with sparkling crystal chandeliers and red velvet curtains. It is home to Brewhouse Arena with its clubs, concerts and trade fairs, alongside talent and business development for creators, innovators, entrepreneurs and start-ups within many different creative industries. Brewhouse Arena has earned a reputation as one of Gothenburg’s most popular meeting places, and also hosts modern concerts and events.

Folkets Hus Hammarkullen

The Folkets Hus Hammarkullen association was established in 1976 when locals saw the need for premises for community events, meetings, studies and other activities. The association gained its own building in 1986, and has served as a hub for Hammarkullen ever since. It is now used for dance group rehearsals, association meetings, study circles, parties, weddings and memorials.

Frölunda Kulturhus

This cultural centre offers an extensive programme of events and exhibitions. There is music for every taste, tea dances, theatrical, dance and cinema performances for all ages, talks and discussions, open workshops with various themes, craft days, painting and much more.

Gustaf Adolfs Torg

The square Gustaf Adolfs torg is in the central Gothenburg district of Nordstaden, alongside the Stora Hamnkanalen canal. It was known as Stora torget or Stortorget until 1854, when Bengt Erland Fogelberg’s statue of the city’s founder, King Gustav II Adolf, was erected on the square.

Gothenburg Art Society

Gothenburg Art Society was established in 1854, and has brought together those with an interest in art for more than 150 years. The society is a non-profit association, and works to stimulate artistic life and to promote an interest in the visual arts within the Gothenburg region.

The Göteborg Opera

This small local theatre is centrally located on the square Järntorget, and has a rich cultural history. It was originally built as a cinema during the 1910s and converted into a children’s theatre in the 1980s, before eventually being re-opened with its current name – Hagateatern – in 2003. At least two performances open here each year, and the theatre also stages guest events such as seminars, debates, readings and much more.

Gothenburg Concert Hall

Gothenburg Concert Hall offers a packed programme all year round. This elegant building is renowned for its acoustics, and is home to Sweden’s national orchestra, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. The world-famous concert hall was built in 1935 to a pioneering architectural design. To this day, the acoustics of the main auditorium are among the finest in the world. The concert hall is located on Götaplatsen, alongside Gothenburg City Theatre, Gothenburg Museum of Art and the impressive statue of Poseidon.

Konstepidemin is a Gothenburg artists’ association and studio area which in 1987 took over the former psychiatric unit for children and young people at the old epidemic hospital on Konstepidemins väg, Linnéplatsen. As well as a hundred or so studios, there are also galleries and a restaurant.

The historic Kronhuset behind the square Gustaf Adolfs torg is one of the city’s oldest preserved buildings. It was built in the mid-17th century as a warehouse for soldiers’ uniforms and other military equipment. It is now a living craft centre, housed in a historic venue.

Kulturhuset Vingen

Here, you will find a library, a cinema, singing and dancing lessons, a theatre, conference rooms, a café and restaurants. There is also a 131 m² exhibition hall, featuring works by professional and amateur artists.

The district of Kviberg is immediately north of the River Säveån, nestled between Kortedala and Gamlestaden in northeast Gothenburg. It covers an area of 288 hectares, and is home to former barracks, Serneke Arena and a large sports ground.

Musikens Hus – ‘the House of Music’ – is an independent, cooperative music and cultural centre with a vision of creating the right conditions for active, stimulating musical culture for the people of Gothenburg. The centre offers fantastic concerts, live acts and DJs within different musical genres. It is part of a cluster of several cultural organisations.

Masthuggsteatern is one of Sweden’s biggest independent theatres, staging drama for children, young people and adults since 1992. The theatre works with various methods, materials and forms of artistic expression. There is also a major focus on new Swedish drama.

Get on board the classic sightseeing boats in the city centre at Kungsportsplatsen, and discover the 17th century moats and canals, as well as the history of Gothenburg’s construction and defence. Concert venue, night club and bar on the square Järntorget. Since the 1920s, Pustervik has been part of Gothenburg’s entertainment and culture scene. For the first 70 years of its history, it was home to the Järntorgsbiografen, Rialto and Prisma cinemas. During the 1990s, it was a theatre.

The Röhsska Museum of Fashion, Design and Decorative Arts

The Röhsska Museum first opened in 1916, and is Sweden’s only specialist museum for design and crafts. The museum brings together historic and contemporary pieces to give the history of design a clear context.

This is the city’s most popular cultural institution. Here, you can borrow books, films, music and magazines, watch TV, read newspapers and much more. The library hosts hundreds of events each year, such as author readings, poetry meetings, writing courses, theatre and film screenings. All activities are free.

Stora Hamnkanalen

The harbour Stora Hamn was built between 1620 and 1622 under Dutch supervision. This was the city’s harbour for 200 years and the city’s elite lived alongside the quay, often with their own jetties down to the water. Grand buildings such as Rådhuset, Gothenburg City Hall (Börsen) and Stadshuset were gradually built along the water’s edge. Once bridges were built, canal trading disappeared. Today, the canal Stora Hamnkanalen is mostly trafficked by Paddan, Let’s Boat and kayaks.

Teater Jaguar

This theatre’s vision has always been to produce meaningful drama for young people, with the maxim of taking young people seriously. Vega Bryggeri

The former industrial district on Ringön, along the northeast edge of the Göta Älv, is now home to a growing number of exciting businesses. One of these is the brewery Vega Bryggeri, which produces beer according to long-standing traditions combined with innovative ideas and curiosity. Hoppy, fruity, crisp, fresh, floral – and local.

Världslitteraturhuset – ‘World Literature House’ – is a public library on the square Gamlestads torg in Gothenburg’s Gamlestaden district. The library opened on 1 December 2018, and has a focus on multilingual literature. Världslitteraturhuset has three floors of books in Swedish and many different languages, films, games, audiobooks and magazines. A lecture theatre on the fourth floor is used for various events.
