New return system for plates and cutlery
Now we take the next step towards a waste-free festival with a large scale and sustainable deposit system. Together we contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable, and creative festival!
Already in 2019, we tested a small scale return system together with the outdoor company Light My Fire. Visitors who wanted to have a meal without using single-use items could buy a food container by Light My Fire, use it during the festival and then return it for the same amount it was bought for. The system was used by 500 people. After the successful pilot test, we decided to develop the system further.
This is how the new system works: When you buy a meal from our food trucks, you pay SEK 30 extra for a plate with cutlery (a so-called spork, a combination of fork, spoon, and knife). When you have finished eating, leave the plate and cutlery at one of the return stations right next to the food trucks. You need to download the PantaPå application on your phone. Scan a QR code using the app and the deposit is returned to your account.
The plates and cutlery will then be washed and then used again. Information about the app can be found on the tables and at each food truck. For foreign guests, we offer the possibility to get the deposit in cash instead of using the app (ask the staff in the return stations for help).
For the new large scale return system, we rent around 12 000 plates and matching cutlery. We estimate that one-third of all food on the GCF will be served on return plates, which is about 40,000 portions! It means that 40,000 fewer disposable plates and cutlery need to be produced and thrown away, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions and contributes to a healthier environment.
The project is funded by The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket) and The Swedish Waste Management Association (Avfall Sverige).
